The Five Best Places to Stay in San Diego, California

The Five Best Places to Stay in San Diego, California:

San Diego, California is a wonderful place to vacation! It has something for everyone: beaches lined with palm trees, hypnotic surf, a wonderful downtown nightlife, award winning restaurants, over 90 fantastic golf courses, and several amusement parks including the San Diego Zoo, Sea World, and Legoland. Having lived in San for over 25 years, this article shares my absolute favorite places in the area. If you are looking for a place to stay while on holiday in San Diego, read on, because these are all fantastic hotels and vacation rentals in the San Diego area that I plan to visit over and over again!

#1 Vacation Rental Condo near Del Mar Beach:

This is probably the most amazing place I’ve ever stayed. The views are breathtaking and the sounds of the ocean waves can be heard throughout the condo when the windows are open! The condo sits up high on a bluff and almost every room has an incredible view of the Pacific Ocean. When you look out the windows in the living room, it’s as if there is nothing but air between you and the ocean. It is really fantastic!

In addition to the incredible views, I really like the location and amenities of this condo. It is located at the south end of Solana Beach and it is very close to the beach city of Del Mar, California. Both of these upscale communities have great restaurants, shops and beaches. Walking down the steps just outside the condo leads you to an almost private beach where you can soak up the sun, or catch the thrill of riding ocean waves on a boogie board or surfboard. The swimming pool offers a nice option if you don’t want to get sandy or traverse the steps down to the beach. The complex includes tennis courts and a club house which is built into the side of a bluff that looks out over the ocean. We picked up dinner one night and ate it in the club house, sitting around the fire pit watching the sun set. We didn’t see the green flash, but it was a very memorable night! If you are like me, and you enjoy a full view of the ocean, the sound of the surf, along with great restaurants, shops, and beaches, then be sure to check out this rental condo in Solana Beach!

#2 Warner Springs Ranch:

WSRanch-entry-Ariel-smWarner Springs Ranch is a hidden treasure nestled in the rolling foothills of Palomar Mountain about an hour outside of San Diego. Located near the old gold-mining town of Julian, Warner Springs is a casual, rustic, resort offering natural hot springs, a championship golf course, horseback riding, tennis courts, a swimming pool, and a health spa where you can get a facial or a massage. While these amenities are great, it’s the things that Warner Springs doesn’t advertise that I adore the most.

Gazing into the starry night. I’ve never seen stars more beautiful than at Warner Springs Ranch. Without the pollution of city lights, stars shine brightly and the Milky Way is easily visible in the dark night sky. My family has made many trips up to Warner Springs during meteor showers so that we can wake up in the wee hours of the morning to watch meteors soar across the sky. One experience that you don’t want to miss is star-gazing while soaking in the mineral hot springs!

No phones or televisions. There are no phones or televisions in the cabins, so it is a great time to connect with family and friends, and to catch up on your reading. Instead of working on your computer, you spend the time exercising, talking, laughing, playing games, and relaxing. I love going to Warner Springs to disconnect from my electronic world.

Falling asleep to a roaring fire. Most of the cabins at Warner Springs have fireplaces which are perfect for gathering around in the evening when the cool desert air settles in. We’ve shared special times with friends having wine and cheese around the fireplace, as well as wonderful family time making s’mores with our children. I always look forward to drifting off to sleep after being out in the fresh air all day, with the fire dancing, crackling, and filling the cabin with its amber glow! When you make a reservation at Warner Springs, make sure to get a room with a fireplace!

A central lodge for old fashioned fun. Warner Springs Ranch has a charming, sprawling, old adobe lodge which is just perfect for reading a book, playing one of their board games which you can borrow, putting together a puzzle, or just hanging out by the fire. The lodge also has a restaurant, a cantina for adults, a television room, and a grand room with an old piano where evening entertainment is often scheduled.

Hiking along the Pacific Crest Trail. There are numerous short nature walks within Warner Springs Resort, as well as hiking trails along parts of the Pacific Crest Trail that satisfy both casual and serious hikers. To the south, there is a moderate hike along a seasonal creek under a canopy of oak trees. For a more challenging hike, the Pacific Crest Trail goes north and offers a challenging climb over rocky terrain with sensational views of the region. Click here to see a hiking trail map for the area: Warner Springs Area Trail Map.

Don’t miss Warner Springs Ranch if you enjoy relaxing get-aways soaking in mineral hot springs, enjoying nature’s beauty, and spending precious time with family and friends playing games, sports, and sitting around a roaring fire!

#3 The Crystal Pier Hotel:

Words can’t adequately describe the experience of sleeping in a cabin which sits on a pier above the ocean, with the surf breaking below you! It’s thrilling, awe inspiring, and absolutely beautiful! Located in Mission Beach, the Crystal Pier Hotel offers a one of a kind experience! The cabins are very well maintained, and after sleeping above the ocean all night, it’s fun waking up early in the morning to take a peaceful stroll along the sandy beach while listening to the waves and the seagulls. As the sun rises over the ocean, the beach fills with swimmers, surfers, volleyball players, and people looking for fun in the sun.

Mission Beach spans almost two miles of the Pacific Ocean, and you can walk most of it along a vibrant boardwalk. Many walkers, runners and cyclists enjoy cruising by the shops, restaurants, and charming houses built in the 1930s and ’40s that line the boardwalk. You do not want to miss experiencing the Crystal Pier Hotel in Mission Beach!

#4 Hotel Del Coronado:

Built in 1888, this luxurious beachfront resort on Coronado Island retains its wonderful Victorian red roof lines, while offering modern amenities, top-notch service, and fantastic restaurants. With its castle-like feel and large white sandy beach, Hotel Del Coronado is one of the most beautiful and magical beach resorts I’ve ever visited.

I love strolling along the historical area of the hotel where the hallways are lined with photos revealing its rich history. If you enjoyed watching the movie, The King’s Speech, you will be interested to know that King Edward VIII gave up his throne in 1936 to marry Coronado divorcee Wallis Spencer Simpson, and many speculate that they first met at the Hotel Del Coronado. The Hotel Del has had numerous famous visitors including 11 U.S. presidents, Thomas Edison, Babe Ruth. and Charles Lindbergh, who was honored at the Hotel Del in 1927 after his successful trans-Atlantic flight. The hotel was also the backdrop for the film, “Some Like It Hot,” starring Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon.

Part of what makes Hotel Del Coronado so special is the peninsula of Coronado where it resides. Coronado is a charming community with laid-back simplicity, beautiful views of the downtown San Diego skyline, pristine white sand beaches, and wonderful shops and restaurants. For a really special beach vacation, I highly recommend the Hotel Del Coronado!

Hotel Del Coronado’s Ghost of Kate Morgan:

What Victorian resort would be complete without a resident ghost? Around Thanksgiving of 1892, a pregnant Kate Morgan checked herself into the Hotel Del Coronado and never checked out. She spent five lonely nights anxiously waiting for her wayward husband to join her, and then committed suicide when he did not show up. Reports of ghostly happenings in her room at the Hotel Del Coronado, all thought to be connected to the death of this beautiful young woman, have been circulating ever since. I’ve personally never experienced any of these ghostly events, but you can click below to learn more about the ghost of beautiful Kate Morgan:

#5 The Rancho Bernardo Inn:

The golf course at the Rancho Bernardo Inn in San Diego, California The Rancho Bernardo Inn is an elegant golf resort and spa located in a residential area of San Diego about 20 miles northeast of downtown. It offers an 18-hole championship golf course, swimming pools, a wonderful spa, beautiful gardens, courtyards, and walkways lined with lush California flowers and plants. The resort grounds are perfect for just lounging and enjoying the wonderful San Diego weather. The food is absolutely fantastic and the service is impeccable! We periodically visit on special occasions just to eat at the restaurants. If you are visiting in the springtime, make sure to go see the white rose garden near the spa, it is heavenly! I wouldn’t book an extended stay here because it is expensive, and it is located 25 minutes away from the beach and downtown, but the The Rancho Bernardo Inn can’t be beat for short get-aways!
